HABITAT LOCATIONS

There are several sites across Canada in which Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes are known to have nested. Unfortunately, some of these locations have not reported the presence of shrikes for some time.

Southwestern Manitoba
Suburban land just north of Winnipeg contains 12 known breeding pairs.

Manitoulin Island
No nesting pairs found in 2001, but recent sightings across the island suggest they may exist.

Carden Plain
A small, but stable population of shrikes is found here. Habitat includes scattered hawthorn throughout large cattle ranches with adjoining fields of unimproved pasture.

Smith Falls Plain
The population of shrikes in this area has declined from 14 breeding pairs in 1992 to 0 in 2001.

Napanee Plain
18 pairs reported in 2001, the largest population reported.

Grey-Bruce Counties
Known as the beef cattle capital of Ontario, it has been an area with the potential for good shrike habitat. The long history of shrike presence here is declining as only one known pair of shrikes has been sighted over the past few years.

Outaouais
Located northwest of Ottawa. This area has a long history of shrike presence, but, the presence of shrike has all but disappeared. Recovery efforts are focusing on the development of a habitat management plan for several hundred acres of pasture grassland which has been donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
